Phenology is the study of periodic plant and animal life cycle events and how these are influenced by seasonal and interannual variations in weather. It has been principally been concerned with the dates of first or last occurrence of biological events in their annual cycle. Recording and studying phenology can give important information in climate changes, but also explain trends in species populations. The length and quality of a season will effect the reproduction and survival of several species. Furthermore, information on phenology is important to time fieldwork in research projects or conservation impact assessments that require fieldwork.

Our object is to register early and late bat activity. This implies when the bats generally start and end their seasonal flight activity. It is important to distinuish between accidental activity and activity related to the local weather/climate conditions. The basis for our work is automated passive ultrasound detectors which will give an even and continous record of the local bat fauna activity. Standardizing such data will make it possible to compare results within and between seasons. In addition accidental records provided by the public will also be usefull, and included when the data is processed and presented.
